When clearing out my dad’s garage I came across an old tin box with photographs of his day’s growing up in Lisburn. I found this photograph with ‘1966′ scribbled on the back. Does anyone know who this boxer was? James.
The young boxer in the photograph is Sam Lockhart from Lisburn Boxing Club. Sam won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in 1966. John Rodgers, a current trustee of the club, represented his country in the Olympic Games and European Championships, and won a bronze medal in the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand. He was honoured for his services to sport by being entered in the Irish Amateur Boxing Association’s Hall of Fame in 2006. I was a trustee of the Lisburn Boxing Club (1984 – 1991) which maintains an historical archive of all previous members. Dan Whiteside
