Hi, This is my gran May Snelling who lives in Nottingham. She grew up in Lisburn and has told us stories of working as a ‘cager’ for a few years in Stewart’s Mill, Antrim Street during the 1930’s. Can anyone tell me any more about what life was like for a ‘cager’ working in the mill?

Yes, I started work when I was 14 during the 1930’s in Stewart’s Mill in Antrim Street. They made thread and you started as a cager like your gran. There were doffers and spinners. You had to have a bag round your waist and when the doffers took the bobbins off the cagers had to carry them and to be very quick. Then if you were lucky one of the doffers would get a job spinning and you would fill their place. I remember working with you gran for a couple of years. Ask her if she remembers Lizzie Bird and Sarah Coburn.
